Supervisory Unions are entities that exist to oversee and administer Vermont's public schools. They contain two or more school districts. Some of the responsibilities include: development of curriculum, providing special education, administering school meals, financial administration, technology services, and data management. Supervisory Unions are the Local Education Agency so they receive and administer federal funds. Supervisory Unions are governed by a Supervisory Union Board. RNESU is a supervisory union.
School Districts are entities that exist to operate one or more public schools, or pay tuition for students in the district. School districts are governed by a school board. Some school districts are composed of a single town, while others cover multiple towns. Responsibilities of a school district include: setting the budget for their district, maintaining school buildings and grounds, and setting district policies. School Districts are supported by supervisory unions. Barstow UU and Otter Valley UU are the two school districts in RNESU.
Barstow UU (BUU) serves the towns of Chittenden and Mendon.
Otter Valley UU (OVUU) serves the towns of Brandon, Goshen, Leicester, Pittsford, Sudbury, and Whiting.
